Knowing that children’s hospitals are underfunded, Costco, its members and employees are making a difference by fundraising. They are changemakers whose impact to change kids’ health isn’t just about helping those in critical situations—it’s also about the research, preventative care, health and safety education and other support services that help build healthier communities today and tomorrow.
During the month of May, you can help us reach the $500 million milestone to change kids’ health! When you shop online or in-warehouse at Costco, make a donation to help kids like Ruth-Evelyn.
Ruth-Evelyn (you can call her “RE” for short) is 9 years old and a ball of energy. She loves roller coasters, dancing, gymnastics, Disney princesses and coloring. What makes RE’s coloring even more remarkable, is that she does so using her feet!
RE was born with a condition called amelia of the arms. It’s a congenital condition that caused her to be born without arms. That means that when she draws, eats or gets dressed, she does all of it using her legs, and she’s gotten quite good at this.
But there was one other thing that RE wanted to be able to do: ride a regular bike just like the ones her friends have. Her specialists in the Orthotics, Prosthetics and Seating department at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, designed a custom orthotic that would allow her to do so. It attaches from around her shoulders to her handlebars so she can steer.
As she does with most things, RE got the hang of it pretty quickly. Now, her parents say they can barely keep up with her!
The Costco fundraising campaign runs through May 1 – 31, 2021 where funds stay local to directly help kids in our community. Since 1988, Costco employees and members have supported Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.
Costco’s societal impact has transformed patients’ and families’ lives. Through donations collected during the annual campaign, Gillette is able to provide world-class care for children with rare and complex conditions so that they can lead happy, healthy, productive lives and thrive.
